About 1,200 to 1,300 litres of hydraulic oil leaked into the sea at the Hanko Westport on Monday afternoon, said the Western Uusimaa Rescue Services.
This amount corresponds to around six barrels of oil.
The oil leaked from the harbour crane and was washed into the sea by rain.
The cause of the leak could not be known immediately.
Efforts to prevent oil spill continued until the evening.
The rescue services, the Border Guard and the personnel working at the harbour were involved in the work to prevent further spillage.
