The amendment to the Finnish Annual Holidays Act entitling employees to postpone annual holiday as of the first day of illness is widely recognised in work places, reported the Finnish language provincial newspaper Keskisuomalainen.

The report said the Confederation of Finnish Industries-EK and the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions-SAK each had commissioned a survey on the issue.

In the SAK survey 70 per cent respondents affirmed the postponement while the corresponding figure in the survey conducted by EK was 56 per cent.

The survey commissioned by EK was based on responses of about a hundred small- and medium-sized enterprises and the survey by SAK interviewed 889 labour inspectors and shop stewards.

In the past, postponement could only be made after seven days of illness.
