Pilke Science Centre held an exhibition on ‘games to save the forest and sustainable use of natural resources’ at its newly-built Forest Arcade from December 25, 2014 to January 11, 2015.

Forest Arcade is built around games to do with forests and the use of renewable resources. The arcade has a collection of board, computer and skill games with a forest theme. The games are suitable for people of all ages and fun to play with friends or family.

The arcade was built in November. “The idea is based on existing games focusing on forest and the use of natural resources. The aim is to make Forest Arcade open, so that it would be easy to adapt to any situation and opportunity. This concept can be used in a variety of events, trade fairs and communications aimed at young people,” says Heikki Hepoaho, chief of the science centre.

Forest Arcade was created as a joint project with the Finnish Forest Foundation. The unique, wooden “Kammi” (Crank) was designed and built by Treeform Oy.

The arcade has varied contents. For example, players can learn about forests by playing iPad, board, craft-based and card games.

“In terms of content, forest learning packages and workshops at the Pilke Science Centre have a difference. They include a game-based element which will be developed further. You can add and delete elements from Forest Arcade, which is open to partners as an arcade in which content and producers are brought together,” explained Hepoaho.

Pilke Science Centre by the Kemijoki is a memorable place to visit in Rovaniemi near the Arctic Circle. The expo at the centre teaches visitors about sustainable use of northern forests and the diverse range of products and commodities connected to the forests. Pilke is rooted in the present and in the bright future of finding many uses of them.

Forest Arcade has released three videos on Youtube. Produced by Flatlight Creative House, the videos aim to raise public awareness, with Heikki Hepoaho from the science centre and Liisa Mäkijärvi from the Finnish Forest Association speaking on the history, structures, experiences and results of the Forest Arcade.

Talking to Finland Times, Daniil Andritsov, who came to visit Rovaniemi with six of his family members, termed the exhibition unique and its approach holistic.

Fabien and Rose Duvilla, a couple from Switzerland, came to visit Forest Arcade with their daughter. According to them, the concept will generate new ideas regarding sustainable use of wood and wooden materials. Their eight years old baby was very happy to play games.
