The Russian ban on food imports has substantially intensified the competition in the Finnish dairy market, according to an evaluation by Arla CEO Reijo Kiskola.

The intensified competition, according to Kiskola, is especially reflected in cheese and fat products.

Despite Arla not having been involved in exporting products to Russia even before the embargo, the backlash of the ban has also been felt by it due to the intensified competition in the Finnish dairy sector.

Valio, another Finnish dairy product company, was the largest exporter of dairy exports to Russia.

According to Kiskola, the tight market situation has also put pressure on the product pricing. At the beginning of the year, Arla reduced milk price from 1.5 cents to nearly 41 cents per litre.

On Tuesday, Arla said it was looking for a new market in the United Kingdom. From this month, the company began to export curd to the UK.

Kiskola said the aim of the new exports measures is to safeguard the company’s current operations.
