FTimes – STT Report, May 8

Foreign graduates are considerably less likely to find employment in Finland, reports a survey conducted by the employee organisation Tekniikan akateemiset (TEK) and university students.

Upon graduation from Finnish polytechnics and universities, two out of three Finns find employment, while only one in four foreign nationals can.

The reasons for poor employment prospects for foreigners are, among other things, little work experience and workplace contacts, weak language skills, and a lack of local networks. Many of them lack knowledge about Finnish workplace culture.

Jari Jokinen, the director responsible for education policy at TEK, wants to pave the way for foreign experts to come work in Finland.

“It’s crazy not to take advantage of these skills,” says Jokinen.
