The Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) is going along with the preparation process for the new social contract, but is not ready for an extension of the total working hours.

SAK Chairman Lauri Lyly after a meeting on Monday said SAK is ready to meet the competitiveness objectives, but it is not committed to the percentage targets.

According to Lyly, SAK has its own proposals for meeting the competitiveness goals.

He said the organisation is not yet ready to commit to anything more than preparation of the social contract.

The SAK leadership maintains that the social contract requires real fairness.

“Businesses and their owners must participate in the contract with the same intensity as what is expected from employees,” the SAK chief said.

SAK requires that any social contract addresses social security for redundant employees.

The review of local bargaining, issues of job security and unemployment benefits must also be addressed in any social contract process.

“A social contract cannot be drawn up, if it is done so only by slashing salaries or lengthening work hours, and if companies and their owners will not commit to an agreement regarding their own responsibilities,” SAK leaders said in a statement.
