The recently introduced car scrapping scheme has gained a huge popularity and resulted in the funds allocated for the project being almost run out, reported Turun Sanomat, a Finnish language daily.
The project launched at the beginning of July is co-organised by the state and the automotive industry.
The reform is aimed at renewing the country’s car fleet by recycling end-of-life vehicles as well as gathering end-of life car lying in the yards.
According to the Finnish automotive industry, buyers of new cars get a 1,500 euro discount upon the purchase of a new car after having scrapped an old end-of-life vehicle. The campaign will support the objective of Finland to reduce the emissions and to improve road safety, because a modern car is up to 50 per cent safer and consumes about a third less fuel than a car of the 1990s.
The state has reserved 3 million euros for the campaign.
The campaign’s target to send 3,000 cars to the scrap yard is likely to be exceeded, revealed Finnish Transport Safety Agency-Trafi Information Director Juha Kenraali.
The campaign will need additional budget appropriation, if it is to continue.
