The Lokapojat waste management company, previously convicted of environmental crimes, will continue to operate under a new name, reported a Finnish language business newspaper, Kauppalehti.

According to the newspaper, the company is now going by the name Uusi Tornado Ympäristöpalvelut (New Tornado Environmental Services).

In 2012, two of the Lokapojat board members were sentenced to four years in prison for damaging the environment and other serious environmental offences.

The company dumped Helsinki metropolitan housing wastewater from 1999 to 2008. The oily waters were then collected in sewers and grease traps and exported to legitimate waste treatment sites.

The main offenders also had to pay about one million euros in damages to the state as well as other damages totalling almost 270,000 euros.

Their sentences remained unchanged by the Appellate Court in 2013.

According to the Kauppalehti, the company continued to operate in a diminished capacity after the discovery of its environmental offences. At the same time, the company’s profitability fell.

The newspaper said that in 2007, the company’s net sales amounted to 2.5 million euros with a profit of 807,000 euros.

Last year, its net sales were 521,000 euros with a profit of only 20,000 euros.
