The extra outflow from Kortelampi and Latosuo is expected to last until the end of the year. The company justifies the outflow with the fact that Kortelampi and Latosuo dam water levels have risen so high that the waters are at risk of uncontrolled discharge into the environment. The company said it has informed the Kainuu Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of not being able to comply with its environmental permit. The company blames the problem on abundant rainfall and restrictions on its contentious discharge pipe. Terraframe claims that it needed to act within a short timeframe, as there was little time to influence the water situation in the mining area.
Talvivaara’s mining operations were moved in August to the state-owned Terraframe, which began to run Talvivaara’s mines located in Sotkamo.
