Economic Affairs Minister Olli Rehn thinks the legislative amendment restricting sharp increases in electricity transfer fees is most likely to be extended to natural gas networks.

Rehn hinted to the news agency STT that the matter would be assessed in connection with natural gas legislative reform.

The Finnish language weekly Suomen Kuvalehti on Saturday reported that the gas distribution company Aurora Kaasunjakelu Oy has increased its gas transfer fees for 30,000 households in Helsinki who use kitchen gas.

According to the customers interviewed by the Suomen Kuvalehti, the hike that came into effect from January is 47.5 per cent. The company headquartered in Kotka operates in 13 municipalities.

“If Aurora’s price hike is actually 47.5 per cent [then] it is unreasonable and is clearly contrary to the consumer protection legislation,” Rehn told STT on Saturday.

Aurora CEO Mika Paloranta did not respond to STT’s call-back request on Sunday.
