Nokia Tyres brand suffered a severe blow on Friday when it became clear that the company manipulated tyre test results, reported a Finnish language business daily Kaup-palehti.

The Kauppalehti report pointed out that Nokia had dispatched tyres which were specifi-cally designed for testing purposes during motor media tests.

According to Nokia Tyres, the company specifically forbid any planning or manufactur-ing of tyres intended only for motor media tests.

Nokia Tyres CEO Ari Lehtoranta said that for years it had been a common practice in the entire tyre industry to send enhanced tires which were not even in production for car media tests.

“We have done so, and the whole industry has been quite wild. We did not even have the worst reputation. If not all then almost all have been busted along the way,” Lehtoranta said.

Lehtoranta believes that the recent revelation about Volkswagen manipulation of emis-sion may lead to conclusions that falsification of results has been "the habit" in many other industries in the area.

In a statement issued following the controversy, the company said that when the testing orgnisations asked manufacturers to send them tyres for the tests, activities in the industry were dubious. The company also apologised for the mistakes it had done in the past.

Nokia shares took a plunge on Friday decreasing by more than 9.6 percent at one point on Friday, reported Bloomberg.
