The Mobile World Congress (MWC), the most important mobile communications event in the world, closed Thursday with a record-breaking 101,000 visitors.

Local media reported on Friday, citing sources of the event's organizers, that the MWC surpassed predictions of around 95,000 visitors this year.

The organizers of the event, GSMA (the representative body of the world mobile industry) considered the event a success despite the metro strike that forced many people to take other means of transportation and caused traffic jams around the city.

GSMA's CEO John Hoffman said this year's event was "the best and the greatest in history."

The MWC, which covered 110,000 square meters at the Fira Gran Via exhibition center, saw a 6-percent increase of visitors when compared with 2015, when it received 95,000 visitors.

A total of 55 percent of the total number of visitors were senior executives.

Meanwhile, the event was covered by around 3,600 foreign media and helped the creation of around 13,000 temporary jobs.

The next MWC will be held between Feb. 27 and March 2, 2017 in Barcelona, the organization announced.
