The European Union agriculture ministers on Monday agreed to distribute a new aid package of total 500 million euros among the member countries to facilitate the current dairy crisis.
Out of the 500 million euros, Finland will get 7.5 million. The detailed conditions for support and usage will become clear by the autumn.
Kari Valonen, agricultural counsellor at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, said an allocation of 350 million euros will be used to help the member states suffering from the diary crisis. In addition, 150 million euros will go to those who agreed voluntarily to reduce production. Currently, the EU suffers from an overproduction of milk.
In recent years, the EU has helped farmers with support in crisis situations stemming from market failures.
Last fall, the dairy industry was granted an aid package of 500 million euros by the EU, of which 9 million euros were allocated to Finland’s agriculture industry.
