Tue, 19 Jul, 2016 12:03:37 AM FTimes – STT Report, Jul 19 File Photo – Lehtikuva. A more robust than usual raspberry harvest is expected this year, said Fruit and Berry Farmers Association Executive Director Hannu Salo.
According to Salo, in a normal year, about a million and a half raspberries are harvested. Warm weather, however, can increase the harvest.
In addition to the increased harvest, raspberries are growing a week ahead of schedule. The first open-field raspberry farms were picked last week. The remaining farms will be harvested this week, said Salo.
Warming does not significantly increase the strawberry harvest.
“The quality of the berries, though, improves, and the amount of waste decreases,” said Salo.
The strawberry harvest this year has been affected by the cold but relatively snowless January, and the hot and dry early summer, and the rains at the beginning of July.
The strawberry harvest this year may be 10 million kilograms, compared to last year’s 15 million.
