The Finnish Customs on Wednesday announced the commencement of codetermination measures affecting their entire personnel.

The temporary layoffs are one of the means by which Customs is trying to control spending.

The Customs must cut about 4 million euros from their budget next year as part of the state’s ex-pense.

Primarily Customs is seeking for savings from other measures, but it estimates that the other measures alone are not enough to correct finances.

In addition to possible layoffs, Customs is cutting back through natural attrition, minimising re-cruitment for replacements, reallocating staff and reducing operating costs.

Should the temporary layoffs take effect, staff will be laid off in stages for one or two weeks next year. All the layoff periods will be the same.

Finnish Customs has approximately 2,200 employees.
