FTimes – STT Report, Oct 21

The government wants to pilot a new basic income scheme from the beginning of next year.

In the first stage of the pilot, a random sample of 2,000 unemployed persons will be given 560 euros per month of tax-free income.

Participation should be mandatory, so that the results of the experiment are not distorted.

The trial is designed to investigate, among other things, whether basic income promotes employment. The results of the experiment will be collated after the first year and, after that, a decision will be made whether to continue the pilot for another year.

In the opinions round in parliament, the pilot was praised for its courage but criticised for its small sample size.
