A news on the website reported on Thursday that Katainen, who had been seen as a likely candidate for the post of EU Commission presidency, was not a candidate at all.
“Finnish Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, who had been seen as one of the likely nominees to replace José Manuel Barroso as EU Commission president, is not a candidate, EurActiv was told by one of his closest aides,” said the report.
The report quoted Pasi Rajala, special adviser on EU affairs to the Finnish prime minister, as saying that Katainen was not in the run for nomination of the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP), of which his National Coalition Party is a member.
The premier’s camp reiterated that at no point had Katainen been a candidate for the post of the EU president.
Katainen had earlier said he would disclose his future plans in April and wished to concentrate on the task that lay ahead.
Former Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker is seen as a front runner for the centre-right European People’s Party (EPP) for EU presidency. Juncker got the backing German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday.
