The highest number of asylum-seeking applicants in the country last year came from Nigeria and Iran, said sources in the Finnish Immigration Service.

The number of Nigerian applicants totalled 206, while applications from Iranians were 167.

The total number of asylum-seeking applications in 2013 was around 3,200, which was roughly the same number as the previous year.

Of the total applications last year, 156 were lodged by minors and slightly less than half of the asylum seekers were granted residence permit, said sources.

Most of the asylum seekers arrived in the country from Iraq, Russia and Somalia.

The average processing time of the cases had also declined by a month-and-a-half compared to the previous year.

Last year, it took an average 190 days to process a single case compared to an average of 234 days during the previous year.
