The government and opposition intended to negotiate seriously on the issue of fiscal adjustment during Tuesday’s meeting, said Petteri Orpo, chairman of Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party) parliamentary group.

In an interview with the Yle television, Orpo said the negotiations, initiated by Prime Minister Jyrki Katainen, were intended to reach a common understanding.

According to Orpo, common view on the adjustments, strengthening economic growth and downsizing the public sector would enhance foreign confidence.

The prime minister has in the past invited opposition parties to participate in a joint discussion on the proposed fiscal adjustments.

Earlier, opposition party Suomen Keskusta (Centre Party) responded positively to the premier’s call for discussions.

According to the Katainen, the discussion is intended to tackle crucial issues of party commitment to the fiscal adjustments: recognition of the Finance Ministry’s forecasts and adjustments; and timetable for the implementation of the measures, whether they need to be done at once or spread over a number of years.
