The Federation for the Animal Welfare Associations (SEY) has demanded the introduction of a guideline, which will allow only certain species of animals to be kept as pets, reported Finnish-language newspaper Savon Sanomat on Sunday.
Kati Pulli, the head of the animal welfare association expressed hopes that the limit would curtail the pet trade of exotic animals such as turtles, snakes, lizards or large parrots.

The association wants the new animal protection law – which has been received positively – to bar the keeping of such animals as pets.
Pulli also said similar measures have already been introduced in Belgium and was spreading in many parts of Europe.
The new guideline would also look to provide solutions to black market trade of dogs and cats.
