The Finnish Communication Regulatory Authority (FICORA) has asked the leading cell-phone device manufacturers and developers of the country to provide assurance for the security of the user's information data.

The intention, according to the authority, was to garner useful information on the data security assessment of the devices, reported a Finnish-language newspaper Helsingin Sanomat on Sunday.

According to the report, Nokia Lumia phones – which uses Microsoft operating systems – transmits user's private information to the United States.

According to information from a number of security firms, Microsoft cooperates with the US security agency NSA.

The Nokia Lumia phones are also used by senior officials and representatives in the Finnish government.

According to the Communication Regulation Authority, the measure is also undertaken for the sake of the security of the government and public data.

The request for data security assessment was sent to Insta DefSec, LM Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nokia and Stonesoft.

Insta DefSec and Stonesoft will provide their data security assurance in summer, while LM Ericsson, Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks will provide theirs later.

At the end of last year, the communication regulatory authority requested Jolla, a Helsinki-based mobile phone designer and developer, to provide assurance on data security.

The authority would continue with the security assessment of the devices and would inform about results upon completion of the assessment.
