Minister for European Affairs and Foreign Trade Alexander Stubb said on Wednesday in London said that Britain was of essential significance to the European Union and the country would also benefit from the membership.

He delivered a speech at the London School of Economics on the ongoing EU debate in Britain, said an official press release.

“Britain exerts influence in a number of ways - the single market, free trade, competitiveness, fiscal discipline, enlargement and external relations, to mention a few. The EU needs Britain and Britain needs the EU,” Stubb said.

It would be particularly complicated to open the EU Treaties for renegotiation - and Britain already enjoys considerable exemptions under the current Treaties.

A membership of the European Economic Area (EEA), with its obligations and no opportunities to participate in decision-making, is hardly an option for Britain, according to the Finnish minister.

“I hope that Britain will work towards reforming the Union together with Finland and the other Member States. It is impossible to influence from the outside,” Stubb said.
