The issue of Ukraine was discussed during a party function of Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland), the second biggest component of the six-party alliance government, in Oulu on Monday.
Former president Tarja Halonen, Finance Minister and SDP Chair Jutta Urpilainen, Member of European parliament Liisa Jaakonsaari and MP Tytti Tuppurainen were among the speakers during the occasion.
Tuppurainen took a tough stance demanding an intervention by the international community on the actions of Russia. "We are living in a time of war in Europe, and Putin must withdraw from Ukraine," said the parliamentarian.
Meanwhile, former president Halonen praised the actions of the incumbent president and the foreign minister for their clear and moderate stance."We have to speak aloud, that there exists certain international rules, and weapons are not part of them," said Halonen.
Urpilainen and Jaakonsaari also expressed hopes that the situation in Ukraine would not escalate to violence.
