Nearly 300 reindeer in Rovaniemi will be sprayed with fluorescent spray on their horns this autumn, confirmed the Reindeer Herders’ Association.

The move is to find out whether the reflective paint during winter darkness will reduce road accidents.

According to the association, the goal of the project is to promote safety for both humans and the animals.

In Finland, 3,500-4,500 reindeer are run over by vehicles a year. The vast majority of accidents happen during the darkest period of the year, which is between November and January.

The pilot testing of the spray paint developed by a Swedish company began in the spring with about 20 reindeer. At that time, the experimental project was carried out to establish how the paint would last in different weather conditions.

This time round, the project’s goal is to monitor the number of accidents in areas near Rovaniemi where the reindeer walk.
