The European Union agriculture ministers have agreed to prepare an aid package to support the dairy sector of Finland and the Baltic countries, said the national broadcaster YLE.

Agriculture Minister Petteri Orpo said not a single country opposed the package.

Finland and the Baltic countries have been hoping for such an aid package to compensate for the losses incurred from Russian counter-sanctions.

Russia in August announced a one-year ban on import of beef, pork, poultry, fish, cheeses, fruit, vegetables and dairy products from the West.

The European Commission will decide the funding package on Wednesday. The commission had already announced in the past that fruits and vegetables were due to receive financial compensations.
