The former president, however, said the issue of recognising the Palestinian statehood should be left in the hands of the current government.
 
Halonen was speaking at a luncheon of political journalists in Helsinki on Tuesday.
 
“I do not disagree with the current regime. I have much hope in the current government,” she said. 
 
The former president, however, observed that such issues tend to pile up until the last minutes, when elections are too close.
 
The new Swedish government has announced its intention to recognise the Palestinian statehood.
 
Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, on the other hand, has stated that recognition of the Palestinian statehood is not on the current agenda of his government.
 
President Sauli Niinistö also has confirmed that Finland has no plans to follow Sweden in recognising the Palestinian statehood.
