Retired citizens will in the future be allowed to fish free of charge.

According to the national broadcaster YLE, the government has finally come to a decision on the controversial issue in the amendments to the Fishing Act.

According to YLE, senior citizens over the age of 65 will be exempted from paying the national fishing fee.

The exemption will however result in increasing the national fishing fee to 39 euros.

Still, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is expected to present at the end of September whether all adult fishers would have to pay for fishing licence or not.

The nationwide fishing fee will replace the regional fishing fee.

Some fishing techniques such as angling and ice fishing will remain free of charge.

In addition, people under the age of 18 will be exempted from fishing fee.
