Foreigners will be able to get Finnish personal identity code number faster than in the past.

From Monday onwards, the personal identification number will be obtained on the same day when one is issued with a residence permit.

From the beginning of December, a foreign national will be able to obtain a Finnish personal identity code while receiving a positive residence permit decision, said a release from the Finnish Immigration Service.

“We have been pressing for this reform since 2007, at least. The legislative amendment of 1 March 2014 allowed the authorities to implement the project, with the results that you see now,” said project Manager Hilkka Vanhatalo at the Finnish Immigration Service.

The project, according to the release, came from an impressive show of cooperation among public officials and was not as a result of any political initiative.

From the beginning of December, residence permit application will include requests for registration.

The new procedure also concerns quota refugees, asylum seekers who are issued with a residence permit, and EU citizens and their family members who are registered in Finland, the press release added.
