Two fishermen from Lohja drowned on Sunday while fishing in the Puujärvi in Uusimaa region.

The fishermen, one elderly and the other middle-aged, were ice-fishing together in the former Karjalohja municipality.

When rescue services arrived at the scene, one of the two had already drowned. The other man also died at the shore despite resuscitation.

According to the police, ice in Lohja area was very weak during the weekend.

“Only the shores seem to have white snow covering the ice,” remarked Chief Constable Sari Heikkinen, the lead investigator in the case.

Elsewhere, in the south, the ice is dangerously weak. A number of rescue service departments said the ice is too thin to sustain pressure.
