A police officer and another company official were arrested in suspicion of bribery and breaching official rules in Helsinki.

Juha Haavisto, the prosecutor leading the investigations revealed that the suspected officer, now in his 50s, has worked with a special operations and counter-terrorism unit in the police known as the Bear Group.

The defence lawyer, however, told the news agency STT that his client denies the allegations.

The officer is suspected of aggravated acceptance of bribe and aggravated breach of office, said the prosecutor.

Haavisto confirmed that investigations initiated last week were at the very initial stage.

He said that the matter was raised from within the police hierarchy itself at the end of last week.

According to Haavisto, a company employee is also involved in the investigations and it is being probed whether incentives was offered to the suspected officer in connection to acquisition of supplies for the police.

Both of the suspects were taken into custody.

The company supplied the Helsinki Police Department a variety of products and equipments including armoured vehicles to the special operations unit.

The suspected officer was involved in the tendering process with the company.

The suspicions date back to 2006 until 2010.

Haavisto said the case does not have any connection with the suspicions surrounding the detained former head of Helsinki police drug unit Jari Aarnio.
