Interviews for asylum applicants are highly charged and psychologically consuming affairs for all the parties involved.

“The applicants may have very strong emotional reactions to what they might be up against. Often, it is very exhausting after the interviews, even though the case would be presumed to be the so-called easy affair,” said immigration officer Piia Pirkola-Mercier.

The progress of the interview can be affected by, among other things, cultural background, age, education level and the health situation of the applicant.

“If the applicant is, for instance, nervous and has been supervised for a week, it can have an influence on what kind of situation arises,” added Pirkola-Mercier.

The final decision is signed by at least two representatives of the immigration service based upon precise records of the interviews.

“This is very much a team effort. If the interview situation has been burdensome, it is wise the task of giving the decision is left to a colleague,” observed Pirkola-Mercier.
