Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja on Wednesday claimed he was not informed about the staunch criticism levelled by former prime minister Jyrki Katainen’s inner circle of his actions when sanctions on Russia was under deliberation in March 2014.
“This is Kokoomus’ internal affairs. Nobody who has been mentioned it (in Suomen Kuvalelti report) ever mentioned any of these things,” Tuomioja was quoted by the news agency STT as saying.
Tuomioja is said to have taken by surprise by the comments of the ruling Kansallinen Kokoomus (National Coalition Party)-NCP leading figures.
“I represent the foreign policy of Finland, not NCP or any party,” said the foreign minister, also a leader of the Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland), the second largest component of the alliance government.
Tuomioja said he learned about the whole controversy on Wednesday, the same day the news was run by the Finnish weekly Suomen Kuvalehti.
