The parliamentary ombudsman has been asked to investigate into the activities of Finnish Customs Director-General Antti Hartikainen who is currently on leave of absence, reported the Finnish media Etelä-Saimaa and Vartti Etelä-Karjala.

The complainants want an investigation into the activities of Hartikainen during his time as both the boss of the customs and his preceding stint as a Border Guard officer.

The complaints made against two customs officials also concern, among other things, the hiring of Hartikainen’s spouse at the customs.

The customs internal situation became public last autumn after the Ministry of Finance said it was setting up a fact-finding committee to investigate into the work culture and management at the customs.

The ministry earlier received a hint that Hartikainen had pushed for her wife to be recruited at the customs.

Interior Minister Päivi Räsänen decided in February to let Hartikainen continue in his position. However, he was given a serious admonition as well as notified on the code of conduct.
