The national broadcaster Yle has been banned from covering European Union Council meetings by Latvia, reported Yle.

The reason for the ban comes after Yle published a video in which the chair of Suomen Sosialidemokraattinen Puolue (Social Democratic Party of Finland-SDP) Antti Rinne states that former chair of SDP Jutta Urpilainen had started campaign for the post of party chair.

According to Yle, the ban will last until the end of Latvia’s term as the president of EU Council.

In the video, Rinne who is also the finance minister is seen discussing with his Slovakian counterpart Peter Kazimir in an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Riga.

In their discussion, Rinne said he believes that Urpilainen intends to lead the party again.
According to Latvian source, Yle acted against the media guidelines to be observed in respect to European Council meetings.

However, Yle said the rules only apply to the EU Council meetings held in Brussels and Luxembourg.
