Niinistö pointed out that the aim now is to investigate to find out what was underneath the water.
Speaking during the opening of the parliamentary session, the president said there is no need to speculate who might have been possibly behind the incident, but added that the matter must be investigated and reacted upon, only if there is a reason.
Niinistö believes the Navy acted with determination and accordingly in the situation in which an underwater object was detected near Helsinki.
The monitoring system, according to the president, seems to be working.

Niinistö said the incident supports the view of the tense situation in the Baltic Sea in which activity has increased.
The observation conditions off the coast of Helsinki were relatively good when an underwater object was discovered in Finnish territorial waters near Helsinki on Monday and Tuesday, said Olavi Jantunen, the Navy’s chief of operations.
According to the Met Office, wind speed on Monday morning off the coast of Helsinki was weak and was blowing at only three metres per second.
On Tuesday during the early morning hours, the conditions near Helsinki coast was completely calm.
The observation conditions, according to Jantunen, are improved due to the fact that water is quite warm in April.
Different temperature layers complicated the passage of sound in seawater and hampered the analysis of observations.
The observation and analysis would also be aided by the fact that yacht traffic is low in April.
“Making observations in mid-summer in this respect is more difficult,” Jantunen told news agency STT.
