The Perussuomalaiset (Finns Party) have nominated 36-year-old Turku native and second term MP Maria Lohela as its candidate for the Speaker of parliament.

The Finns Party parliamentary group settled for Lohela on Thursday afternoon.

The parliament will elect the speaker and two deputy speakers during today's plenary session.

"We are very happy and proud to have a young and qualified female speaker in Finland," the party chair, Timo Soini praised Lohela after the meeting.

Lohela promised to be an open, unbiased and fair Speaker. It is imperative, according to Lohela, for a speaker to be unbiased and that she does intend to assume an active role commentating on social matters like her predecessors Sauli Niinistö and Eero Heinäluoma.

"I feel that it would be better that I should not necessarily take sides in all social issues. These are very difficult times in Finland and in my opinion it is important that all the voices are heard," Lohela said.
