Finland will have to decide on five fighter jet options from Western countries to replace the Hornets.

News agency STT understands American made F-35 and F/A-18E Super Hornet, Swedish Jas Gripen NG, French Dassault Rafale as well as well as European aircraft manufacturer Eurofighter Typhoon are possible candidates to replace the Hornet fighter jets.

Modern fighters are also manufactured in Russia and China.

The chair of the exploratory working group tasked with overseeing the replacement of Hornets, Lauri Puranen told news agency STT that the task of the steering group has been to explore how the performance of the Hornets which will become obsolete in the decade will be replaced.

Retired Major General Puranen, who is a former commander of Air Force, did divulge to STT the options on table for the replacement of the aging Hornets.

"We do not comment on the type of aircraft, price or number of the aircraft in the working group," he said.

According to Puranen, the working group has identified the replacement weaponry system along with how to prolong the life cycle of the Hornets.

The committee's work is virtually complete, and its results with the look of things will be presented to the new Minister of Defence Jussi Niinistö during the second week of June.
