Two police officers have begun patrolling the Tampere Central Square at the city's expense to prevent disturbances, public drunkenness and littering along with other police duties, where and if appropriate.
The Tampere City Council approved on Monday a rare agreement negotiated with the Sisä-Suomen (Inner Finland) Police Department, according to which, the city will pay police salaries for four months.
The city paid the police department 35,000 euros in total for the fixed-term service relationship. The agreement goes into effect immediately and will finish at the end of September.
Nearby business owners have raised concerns about the deteriorating security situation.
The agreement will be assessed in the autumn, with the possibility of continuing the arrangement.
