File Photo – Lehtikuva. The Helsinki police department has stopped the payment of salary to Jari Aarnio, the former head of Helsinki drug police unit.
Aarnio has been receiving half of his salary since his arrest in November 2013.
On Tuesday, Aarnio was sentenced to a year and eight months in prison for, among other things, accepting bribe and aggravated breach of official position in the surveillance company Trevoc trial which began in December 2014.
According to Lasse Aapio, the chief of Helsinki police department, payment of the salary ended on Tuesday since Aarnio was sentenced.
“The dismissal procedure will happen when the judgement becomes final,” Aapio said.
The court observed that Aarnio played a dual role when the Helsinki police procured surveillance equipment from Trevoc.
According to the court, Aarnio was disqualified by participating in the procurement of the tracking devices from Trevoc while, at the same time, participating in the activities of Trevoc.
According to the verdict, Aarnio’s activities were planned and long-term.
Besides Aarnio, three other people were sentenced. Two were sentenced to prison while one was fined.
In all, nine people were charged in the Trevoc case. Five other accused in the case were acquitted.
Aarnio was arrested on November 12, 2013 on charges of crimes including taking bribes from a private company.
He is also suspected of receiving kickbacks from Trevoc company and being involved in procurement of supplies from the same company for his employer.
Almost 30 charges have so far been pressed against Aarnio. The former chief of the Helsinki police drug unit, however, denies all of them.
