A nationwide inspection on heavy traffic last week found that over one in 10 drivers broke driving and rest period regulations.
During the two-day inspection, the police inspected 901 local and 232 foreign vehicles.
A total of 12.7 per cent of the inspected drivers broke driving and rest period rules. Sixty-four vehicles were found to have maintenance problems leading to the suspension of journey of 17 vehicles at the scene of inspection.
Shortcomings related to loading regulations led to penalties for 39 drivers.
Fifteen trucks were also found to be overloaded and 15 were wanted in cases. There were 10 cases of lack of roadworthiness and four of drunk driving.
Compared to the previous year’s inspection, shortcomings related to condition of the vehicles increased the most, said Police Inspector Kari Onninen from the National Police Board.
