The number of victims of human trafficking in the country who received assistance so far this year has increased

According to Joutseno Reception Centre which is responsible for overseeing the system of assistance for victims of human trafficking, 31 new victims received help at the beginning of the year, while the figure at the same period last year was 21.

Eleven of the victims of trafficking who received help this year were sexually abused, while 15 victims had been abused at work places, for instance, ended up as victims of forced labour.

The largest single ethnic group comprised of Nigerians with six victims. The second largest group was made of Finns with five victims.

The number of trafficking victims is thought to be more than what is recorded, since not all cases come to attention. Similarly, not all victims end up as clients of the assistance system.

By the end of June, there were 88 clients within the system of assistance for victims of human trafficking.
