Prime Minister Juha Sipilä termed the initiation of a new nuclear project unlikely during the tenure of the present government and sees the possibility of the Pyhäjoki plant becoming the last nuclear power project in the country.

In an interview with a regional daily, Keskisuomalainen, the premier said there has been no application and neither has there been an ongoing discussion on nuclear permit. He, however, did not completely rule out the possibility of a new application.

“If there is a new environment, the energy demand estimates must be assessed. All plans indicate that this one (Fennovoima project) will be done,” Sipilä told the newspaper.

According to Sipilä, the government hardly needs to take a position on nuclear power during the current parliamentary term because it will be implementing the decision taken by the previous two parliaments.

The continuation of Fennovoima nuclear power plant project was confirmed when the domestic requirement was fulfilled, thanks to the new shareholders.
