A couple of hundred demonstrators gathered on Thursday in Helsinki to protest the Fennovoima nuclear power plant.

The demonstrators marched alongside a drum orchestra from the Railway Square to the Senate Square.

Besides the local demonstrators, protestors from Sweden including the members of the Kärnkraftfritt Bottenviken organisation came to Helsinki to protest the planned nuclear power plant project in Pyhäjoki.

The colourful demonstration at the Senate Square raised the attention of the tourists flocking to the Square.

“No more Hiroshima, no more Fukushima, no more Fennoshima,” the demonstrators roared on the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bombing.

The demonstration attracted participants from different parts of the country.

Marianne Cygnel, who came to Helsinki from Pyhäjoki neighbouring town of Kokkola expressed her disapproval of a “secretive” nuclear power plant acquisition from Russia.

“Russia is not an open democracy. We are not told all that lies beneath, rather things are hidden from us,” said Cygnel adding “That strange arrangement with a Croatian company shows that Fennovoima cannot be trusted.”
