The Border Guard is investigating dozens of identity documents such as passports send to refugees via airmail, said the Customs office on Thursday.

If the documents are suspected of being counterfeit, then the Border Guard or the police will begin criminal investigation.

Counterfeit documents could uncover, among others, the organization of illegal immigration.

The Helsinki-Vantaa airport customs office has found about 500 documents relating to various aspects of identity.

The documents were being sent to refugees in reception centres or individuals. About one-fifth of the documents have been taken by the Border Guard for investigations.

Many asylum seekers have told authorities that their documents were still in Turkey or Iraq, from where they will be sent by mail to Finland.

Apparently, keeping hold of personal documents is considered to be a risk, even if the asylum seekers wish to present them to authorities at their destination, the Customs office said in a statement.

Sending documents by post is intended to prevent the loss or disappearance along the way.
