Sat, 26 Sep, 2015 01:51:58 AM FTimes-STT-Xinhua Report, Sep 26 President Sauli Niinistö. File Photo – Lehtikuva. The incidents of attacks on a bus carrying refugees in Kouvola and in a asylum centre in Lahti sparked national condemnation.
President Sauli Niinistö has condemned the violence and intimidation tactics. Niinistö stresses that the racist violent acts that occurred in Lahti are crimes, and those participating in such acts are criminals.
According to Niinistö, violence has no part in protest demonstrations. The protest should, according to Niinistö, be aimed at decision makers, not the refugees themselves.
Niinistö commented on the matter during the New York Conference on Sustainable Development. According to him, the Ku Klux Klan event looks horrible for Finland's international reputation.
Prime Minister Juha Sipilä told the media that such acts are unacceptable and will have consequences. He said the matter is related to the atmosphere in the country. Foreign Minister Timo Soini also condemned the attacks.
The government has issued a statement on Friday to condemn the recent racist protest against asylum seekers in Finland.
The Finnish government strongly condemns the recent racist protest targeting asylum-seekers arriving in Finland, said the statement that quoted Prime Minister Juha Sipilä,
Minister of Foreign Affairs Timo Soini and Minister of Finance Alexander Stubb.
They said Finland is an international, open and tolerant country, where a large majority of people accepts immigrants.
The government and the authorities are monitoring the situation closely, said the cabinet.
Early Friday morning, a group of 40 demonstrators shouted abuse and threw fireworks, stones and lighted torches, when two busses carrying about 100 asylum seekers drove up to an accommodation centre in the southern Finnish town of Lahti.
Some of the protesters even wore the white hood and iconic robes of the Ku Klux Klan, a typical racist organization in the United States.
