Elk and deer hunting starts in most parts of the country on Saturday. During this period, about 100,000 hunters will move through the forests of Finland.
The Finnish Wildlife Agency had issued 37,400 elk hunting permits this autumn, which is 10 percent higher than last year. Permits for white-tailed deer were up by more than 10 percent, with 25,800 being granted. The permit allows for one adult or two calves.
Moose hunting will continue throughout much of the country until the end of December, while the deer hunting season does not end until January 31.
Last year, hunters killed 39,500 elk. This year, the number is expected to increase to 45,000.
