A scheduled meeting between the visiting Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and his Finnish counterpart Timo Soini could not be held on Sunday due to the latter’s illness, foreign ministry sources said.

The visiting foreign minister, however, met top officials of the ministry in absence of the minister.

“We have received a clear assurance from the EU that there should not be any kind of horse trading. This is about the principle of international law and values,” Klimkin was quoted by the Finnish language newspaper Helsingin Sanomat as telling a press conference.

“I also hope that the era of horse trading is over,” he added.

The discussion focused on the Minsk agreement whose compliance is tied to the sanction imposed on Russia. The EU will discuss whether to extend the sanctions in January 2016.

According to Klimkin, the content of the Minsk agreement could be considered a success but its implementation is limping badly.

Soini was not able to participate in a meeting scheduled for Sunday as he has been suffering from fever since the end of his official trip to Indonesia, foreign ministry sources said.
