Defence Minister Jussi Niinistö on Monday said that regulations related to inviting conscripts to refresher courses will undergo changes during the current parliamentary term.

Currently, reservists are called up for refresher courses three months before the training begins.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the National Defence Courses in Helsinki, Niinistö said from the perspective of today’s threats, three-month time seems too long.

Niinistö, however, did not specify the exact time limit as the preparatory work is still going on.

“The current legislation was drawn up at a time when threats were believed to develop slowly and the period of defence preparations was several months,” Niinistö said.

The defence minister also wants conscripts to be used more widely in standby duties.

“We cannot afford to leave the potential of conscripts unutilised,” he added.

Niinistö will attend the meeting Nordic defence ministers in Stockholm scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. The ministers will discuss, for instance, the possibility of relying on each other in using the airports as well as development of training activities.
