The Finnish Red Cross announced that it had received over euro 1.7 million in Christmas Spirit donations by Thursday.

The collection target was around euro 1.5 million and the excess money will now be distributed in gift cards next year.

The proceeds from the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare and the Finnish Red Cross this year was used to benefit 22,000 needy families with children or families with children in difficult situations.

According to the Finnish Red Cross, a record number of companies which donated euro 1,500 or more participated in the donation.

This year, there were 400 such companies compared to 290 last year.
