File Photo Lehtikuva. People now on may cross the Russia-Finland border in Lapland only by car, said the Lapland Border Guard on Saturday.
A prohibition against cycling across the border has been approved for the Lapland region.
Crossing the border on foot is already banned. So most of this year’s asylum seekers from Russia have rode bicycles.
The prohibition on cycling is justified on grounds of safety, said the Border Guard.
“Cyclists unfamiliar with the slippery road conditions may endanger the safety of themselves and others on the road,” said Lapland Border Guard General Director Tommi Tiilikainen.
On Boxing Day (December 26), a passenger car with Russian registration arrived at the Salla Kelloselä border guard station, and five of the six persons in the car applied for asylum in Finland.
There was also one Russian in the car who did not apply for asylum. He is suspected of organising illegal entry of asylum seekers into the country.
